Day 4: Who NOT What

Today we’re unpacking the BIGGEST problem with traditional goal setting. When you realise this, it will start to change your outlook on the entire goal setting process.

Day Four: Bonus Content

Who NOT What.

This is by far the BIGGEST problem with the traditional goal setting processes:

THEY ARE TASK-ORIENTED.

Yesterday we spoke about the creation of goals based on the traditional norms and biases of society and today we’re taking that even further and looking directly at the goals themselves.

When you decide to ‘write a book’ or ‘eat healthy’ you start to obsess over the outcomes or the specific tasks involved rather the real value of the goal itself. This is why most goals fail.

Although this might sound useful in the short term, we’re striving for long-lasting and transformative change. Because of this, we’re going to stay selfish and start curating goals for us based on our own growth and development instead.

I don’t agree with the phrase, “Everyone has a book inside of them” but I do believe that every WRITER has a book inside of them. Notice the difference? It’s subtle…

It’s a complete identity change.

That’s what we’re striving for today: goals that are focused on your incredible growth.

Lucky for you, this isn’t as challenging as you might think. Simply ask yourself the questions:

  • Who do I want to be?
  • What goals will help me transform into that person?
  • How can I set better goals that will help me grow and develop?

If you’re not a proficient writer and you decide to write a book, you won’t just write the book itself but you’ll need to become a writer. This is fundamental identity shifting.

But that’s not the best part… The best part?

IT FLOWS BOTH WAYS.

When you make an identify shift, you will start to adopt habits of that identity, perform better at related tasks and you’ll unlock an incredible energy that you won’t have found when staying outcome oriented.

If you’re familiar with ‘affirmations’, this is what they do to an extent. They are phrases or mantras that you recite to yourself to help you build up the identity of the desired outcome.

Though affirmations can be a lot less specific and can also a lot more holistic too, it’s worth learning more about these as they can be a real pick-me-up for identity shifting.

Your Task Today:

Over the past few days, you’ve taken stock of what your identity is NOW (to a degree) and today we want to start uncovering a little more about your past experiences with goal setting and life overall.

Here is your mission for today:

  1. Consider past goals or experiences that were not growth-oriented
  2. Find places in your own life that don’t focus on growth
  3. MAKE A COMMITMENT TO YOUR GROWTH

1 – Start to spot areas that your development was stunted as a result of outcome-based goals. There is a place for them, but we’re focusing on transformation. If you can spot them in hindsight, you can target and prevent them today.

2 – You did a full check of your entire life yesterday – CHECK IT. Spot categories that aren’t supporting your growth. For example, my household is putting pressures in regards to my diet – This is something that’s holding me back from peak health and I can target with effective goals that we’ll learn about over the next few days.

3 – PHYSICALLY WRITE THIS DOWN.

There are countless studies in regards to the writing process but trust me, it does truly powerful things in your brain that thinking and typing don’t do.

I also don’t care how uncomfortable with this you are but if you’re not already committed to PROACTIVELY growing as a person, I want you to make a commitment to this challenge and to yourself.

This doesn’t mean you’ll take the odd course if your job offers it – you’re going to be seeking opportunities to further your skills and life overall.

That’s your mission for the day.

Once you flip the switch to these new belief about your goals, the process will change your targets for the better.
